After the whole Maker’s Mark fiasco, Beam Inc. has quietly lowered the proof of Old Grand Dad from 86 to 80. OGD comes in two other expressions a bonded 100 proof and 114 proof and uses Jim Beam’s ‘rye-heavy’ mash bill that is also used in their popular Basil Hayden bourbon.
Fans gravitate to Old Grand Dad on account of its unique taste and high proof. It’s also much more affordable then Basil Hayden ($37). In my area the prices for OGD starts at $17 for the 80°, $20 for the 100° and $25 for the 114°. This move, along with dropping the age statement on Basil Hayden, ‘technically’ makes OGD 80° and BH the same product as far as proof and mash bill goes.
At this point I can only hope Beam leaves the other two Grand Dads just the way they are.
